Assertive communication is the basis of relating well to others. It’s the key that helps us get to know and develop our real personality and, in the process, to fully understand someone else.
Assertiveness and communication are dependent on each other. Learning to communicate in an assertive way is a crucial step towards building rewarding relationships in our personal and professional lives.
Assertiveness means we can put forward our ideas and handle a range of potentially difficult situations in a way that shows we respect ourselves and other people.

Learning outcomes
- Learn the three ways of relating – passive, aggressive and assertive. Sarcasm, silence and other forms of aggression
- I’m ok, you’re ok. How to say no – without feeling guilty. Giving excuses and other tell-tale signs.
- Self-image and self-respect – why they matter and great ways to build self-esteem.
- Handling criticism, assertiveness techniques – “why would you say that?”… “you could be right…” – using the broken record.
- Negotiation skills – hard, soft v. principled – don’t give concessions – trade them.
