Mental Health First Aid Aotearoa
About 1 in 5 New Zealand adults experience a common mental illness each year. Understanding how to talk about mental health and help someone in need are important skills. This Mental Health First Aid course, will teach you the skills and knowledge to recognise and respond to someone experiencing mental health challenges.
Description
An increasing number of workplaces are recognising the impact of mental health challenges on their people and productivity. Encouraging employees to seek help early is one way to promote a mentally healthy workplace. Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based workshop which gives employees the skills and confidence to have supportive conversations with their co-workers and help guide them to professional help if needed.
You will learn to recognise common mental health challenges, how to provide initial help to someone experiencing a mental health challenge using a practical, evidence-based action plan, and how to respond in a crisis situation. During the workshop you will have the opportunity to practice new skills in a safe environment.
Mental health challenges covered in the course include:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Psychosis
- Substance use problems
Mental Health Crisis Covered:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non- Suicidal self-injury
- Panic attack
- Traumatic events
- Severe effects from Alcohol or other substance use
- Aggressive behaviours

Learning Outcomes
Participants will:
- Learn and apply the ALGEE five step action plan in a non-crisis and crisis situation
- Increase their mental health literacy
- Increase their confidence to provide initial help and guide a person towards professional help
- Identify agencies who provide support/or know how to get immediate assistance if necessary
Course Format
This course will be delivered over two days (9am-4pm each day).
Target Audience
Ideal training for anyone including managers responsible for their staff, those interacting with the public or simply anyone who wants to improve their knowledge around mental health.
People who attend Mental Health First Aid training can complete an online assessment to be accredited as a Mental Health First Aider. The accreditation is valid for three years. If you choose not to be accredited, you will receive a certificate of participation.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a programme Jodi champions due to the overwhelming benefits for individuals, workplaces and communities. Jodi has been accredited as a Mental Health First Aid instructor through Te Pou, the national license host of MHFA Aotearoa. The MHFA programme is now licensed and available in over 24 countries worldwide, under which 4 million people have been trained.
