The impact of an effective mentor on the professional development of an engineering graduate is significant, and delivers both tangible and intangible benfits to the mentor, mentee, their employers and the profession.
This practical half-day workshop provides a framework for the essential elements of mentoring, comprising tools that will ensure that positive relationships and rapport are built between the mentor and mentee. In addition, a practical structure is provided, so that mentoring meetings achieve the required communication and professional development goals.
This workshop will benefit mentors, managers and project or team leaders with responsibility for developing and managing the performance of others. This workshop will improve your ability to understand and develop the potential and skills of others, through the effective delivery of this crucial professional role.
By the end of the workshop participants will demonstrate:
- a clear understanding of the benefits of mentoring for all stakeholders
- clarity about what mentoring is and isn’t (including distinctions between mentoring, coaching, managing and counselling)
- an understanding of the roles and responsibilities as a mentor, and what is expected of mentees
- a summary of the key elements of running an effective mentoring meeting
- an introduction to the core competencies for effective mentoring.
Presenter information
Desirée Williamson is an experienced facilitator who delivers learning and development training in the engineering, project management and education sectors.
As a director of a Christchurch-based corporate communication consultancy Communication Works (www.communicationworks.co.nz), Desirée is an accredited Belbin Team Roles facilitator. She designs and facilitates workshops on all aspects of effective workplace communication, including: report and business writing, presentation skills, team building, chairing meetings, courageous conversations, customer engagement and coaching. Desirée also facilitates courses on professional development programmes for the University of Canterbury and the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce.
