Many engineers who are strong in the technical field find themselves in leadership roles that previous technical success hasn’t prepared them for. This course will introduce ‘coaching basics’ as a tool to support effective leadership growth and performance
Description
Leadership is about creating the environment for others to succeed. Coaching is a particularly useful tool for engineers in this space.
This course will explore the significance of leadership for engineers (how we experience leadership working well, the consequences of poor leadership) and the role coaching can play in enabling others to deliver important outcomes. We will introduce core competencies and basic models for effective coaching, and provide pathways to develop these skills.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, attendees will have an understanding of:
- What coaching is, and the significance for engineers as their careers develop into leadership
- Core models of coaching that can be applied from day one
- Awareness of coaching core competencies, the basic skill areas that will bring success
- Next steps; when and how to access coaching or to develop the skills further
Target Audience
People managers or those who have responsibility for the leadership of others in their work (such as project leaders).
Course Format
This course will be delivered using examples, activities, and interaction to engage with the content.
Presenter Information
Simon Boys is an engineer (Fellow IMechE, MEngNZ), a project and change professional (PMI member) and a professional coach (ICF credentialled, ACC).
He founded and owns ProjectForward.co.nz and is also a member of Fonterra’s Assets and Capital Projects lead team. He has held numerous operations, engineering and project leadership roles.
Coaching is central to his Development Manager role in Fonterra, and he has delivered online workshops on coaching and leadership to a number of audiences.
