CIBSE - Fundamentals of drainage design for reactive and unstable soils
Understanding soil movement, pipe structure and drainage system stability
Description
This course has been developed in conjunction with AHSCA QLD, CIBSE, HCAA and ICC.
This course equips hydraulic designers, engineers, plumbers, and regulators with the knowledge and skills needed to understand drainage system challenges in reactive and unstable soils and determine when specialist expertise is required.
It is designed to build foundational understanding and practical awareness of drainage design in reactive and unstable soils.
It is not intended to develop participants into subject matter experts in geotechnical or specialist design disciplines. Rather, the focus is on equipping participants with the knowledge to recognise key risks, identify when conditions fall outside standard solutions, and understand when to engage appropriately with qualified experts.
The intent is to support more informed decision-making, improve communication across disciplines, and promote consistent, compliant approaches within the constraints of the NCC and relevant standards.
This course is suited to:
Those wishing to develop a practical understanding of drainage design considerations in reactive and unstable soils, improve their ability to identify potential risks and limitations of standard solutions, and better understand when specialist geotechnical or engineering input is required.
- Hydraulic consultants and designers
- Engineers and project managers
- Plumbing contractors
- Plumbing regulators, inspectors and certifiers
- TAFE instructors and vocational trainers
- Builders
- Architects
Learning outcomes:
On completion of this course you will have an understanding of the following:
- Understand reactive and unstable soil behaviour in drainage design
- Understand the requirements of the BCA, AS 2870, AS 2566.1 and interpret the requirements of the PCA and AS/NZS 3500.2 correctly for plumbing applications
- Understand what other experts are required to determine and develop the correct solution
- Identify when to use DTS solutions vs Performance Solutions
- Navigate jurisdictional differences and plumbing regulators' expectations
- Apply real-world design techniques through case studies and exercises
This course is suited to:
- This course is suited to those in the early stages of their electrical services engineering career and those specialising in other areas of the construction and the building services industry who wish to gain a better understanding of electrical services design principles.
Learning outcomes:
On completion of this course, you will have an understanding of the following:
-
Statutory, Cost and Technical considerations for Electrical Services design and component selection
-
Minimum standard requirements and best practices in Electrical Services design
-
Key components of the electrical plant and systems
-
The complexities and interrelatedness of Electrical Services and other building services, which ensure/reflect a people-first approach, over a building-first mindset.
-
Key aspects of Electrical Services including Generation, Distribution, Reticulation and Cabling, Load Demand Testing and Commissioning and Lighting
-
The importance of focusing on the comfort, health, wellbeing, and safety of the people who might occupy the building, and the appropriateness of the sustainability strategy in relation to those people.
Course Format:
One day online course (delivered over Teams) with four 90min sessions, and three breaks throughout the day.
All sessions will be recorded and made available to participants for 30 days after completion.
