This live online course will introduce the general concepts for retention systems for basement construction (e.g. sheet piles, secant piles, diaphragm wall, lateral support systems, etc.). This course is a slightly reduced version of the face-to-face course ‘Basements & ground retention systems’.

With increased construction activities in the past few years, the demand for more complex retaining walls and other ground retention systems has grown significantly. This course introduces the general concepts and principles of the design and construction of embedded retaining walls such as sheet pile walls, soldier pile walls and timber pole walls.

This course introduces the general concepts and principles of the design and the construction of gravity retaining walls such as reinforced concrete walls, block walls and crib walls.

This course introduces the general concepts and principles of the design and construction of embedded retaining walls such as sheet pile walls and king post walls.

This course introduces the general concepts and principles of the design and the construction of gravity retaining walls such as cantilevered reinforced concrete walls and block walls. Participants will explore the general differences between gravity retaining walls and embedded retaining structures, the suggested minimum site investigation requirements, and the calculation of static and seismic earth pressures in accordance with relevant codes, standards and guidelines.
