This live online course will introduce the general concepts for retention systems for basement construction (e.g. sheet piles, secant piles, diaphragm wall, lateral support systems, etc.). This course is a slightly reduced version of the face-to-face course ‘Basements & ground retention systems’.

The course will introduce the fundamental principles and some well-established methods of pile design and analysis of single piles and some of them can be applied without the use of complex computer software. The course content will cover the most relevant aspects of pile design for single piles (e.g. axial, lateral, down drag, rock sockets). We will also discuss some practical examples and case studies to demonstrate the ‘real world’ applications of the course content.

With increased construction activities in the past few years, the demand for more complex retaining walls and other ground retention systems has grown significantly. This course introduces the general concepts and principles of the design and construction of embedded retaining walls such as sheet pile walls, soldier pile walls and timber pole walls.
