Project Management for Engineers

Many practitioners who have to manage projects have never been formally exposed to a structured “big picture” of project management. This live online course aims to present a structured and coherent way of accepted best practice principles used to define, plan and execute projects.

Description

Projects are at the heart of delivering engineering outcomes. It is therefore essential that engineers who act as project managers, have a sound and  structured understanding principles and not only of the detail  tools and techniques.

This live online course will introduce the underpinnings of this extremely useful technique to novices as well as to seasoned practitioners.

The key tasks of the project manager, from defining requirements, planning the project to controlling the execution of the work, are dealt with by using a process-based view of the project over its total life.

Learning Outcomes

Delegates who attend the course will:

  • Gain insight into placing the project in context with contract and specification management activities.
  • Gain an awareness and understanding of project scoping as well  as requirements elicitation.
  • Understand the process of effective project planning through activity definition and resource  allocation.
  • Gain awareness of project control methods that use a structured project plan.
  • Gain insight into closing out the project properly and identifying lessons learned – an often neglected activity.

Course format

Principles and examples will be presented.

Learning will be reinforced through attendees being given the opportunity to critically evaluate project management processes from their own work environment against best practice norms.

Intended Audience

Council engineers, development engineers, consulting engineers, contractors, product or software developers, manufacturing, and also procurement officials in client organisations, whether public or private sector.

Presenter Information

Piet Beukman retired in 2019 as the Director of the Engineering Management Programme at the University of Canterbury and is now self-employed as a coach, mentor, consultant and educator.  An accomplished “pracademic”,  he has over 40 years of experience in the aerospace, military, marine engineering, venture capital, commercialisation and consulting industries to offer. He also managed complex engineering projects.
